When is Morocco’s surf season?
The Atlantic coast around Imsouane has waves all year, but it does not work the same way all year. North-west swell, generated by low pressure systems far out in the North Atlantic, arrives most consistently from September through April. December to February is the peak of that pattern: the biggest surf and the busiest lineups. From May to August those systems track further north, and the coast settles into small, gentle waves that are close to ideal for learning.
Water temperature moves far less than the swell does. Expect roughly 17-20C in winter and 20-23C in summer, which is why a 3/2 wetsuit covers most of the year here.

These are typical patterns, not guarantees. Any month can throw out a quiet week or a surprise swell.

What are the winter months like?
December to February is when the coast is at full volume. Swell is bigger and lands more often, so you rarely wait long for waves, and the lineup fills up accordingly. It is also when the difference between Imsouane’s two waves matters most.

Magic Bay’s sand bottom and long, gentle peel are why beginners can still get useful sessions in January. Cathedral Point, sitting on the exposed side of the headland, takes the swell head-on and is a different proposition entirely.
Is summer worth the trip?
If you are learning, yes. May to August gives you the smallest waves of the year, water at 20-23C, and a wave that is already forgiving to begin with. That combination shortens the time between your first lesson and your first proper ride. If you are an experienced surfer chasing size, this is not your window, though you may still find rideable days.
Which months are the best compromise?
September to November and March to April sit between the extremes. Swell is in the forecast without midwinter’s peak crowds, and the water has not reached its coldest. September in particular still holds summer warmth while the first north-west swells are arriving.
Why the time of day matters as much as the month
Whatever month you pick, mornings are usually the cleanest. Onshore wind tends to build after midday and puts texture on the surface, so early sessions are generally the tidiest of the day. A small, clean morning often beats a bigger, windblown afternoon, which is why camp routines here tend to start early.
Getting here
Imsouane sits on the Souss-Massa coast, roughly 2 hours north of Agadir by road, about 90 minutes south of Essaouira, and 3.5-4 hours from Marrakech. The nearest airport is Agadir Al Massira (AGA).
