7-Day Morocco Surf Trip Itinerary: Imsouane Plan

A realistic 7-day Morocco surf itinerary based in Imsouane, with morning surf sessions, flexible days, and backup plans for when the swell goes flat.

By Tafukt Surf Updated 5 min read

A realistic 7-day Morocco surf trip has you surfing in the mornings, when the wind is usually cleanest. Afternoons are for rest, theory and activities. Fly into Agadir and take the transfer of about two hours north to Imsouane. Plan five surf sessions over days two to six, with room for one flat or windy day. If the sea won't work, swap in Paradise Valley, sandboarding, a cooking class or a trip to Essaouira.

What does a realistic 7-day surf itinerary look like?

The most common mistake on a surf trip is planning seven sessions in seven days. The Atlantic doesn’t follow a schedule. Swell arrives in pulses, wind changes during the day, and your arms and shoulders need recovery time, especially if you’re new to surfing.

A realistic week is built on three rules:

  • Surf in the morning. In Imsouane, mornings are usually cleanest, and onshore wind tends to build after midday.
  • Aim for five sessions, not seven. Arrival and departure days rarely leave room for a proper surf.
  • Keep one day flexible. If a day is flat or blown out, swap it for an activity rather than forcing a bad session.

What does each day look like?

This plan assumes you’re based in Imsouane and arrive through Agadir. The surf column is a rough guide, because conditions decide the actual timing each day.

DayMorningAfternoonIf the sea won’t work
1Fly into Agadir (AGA)Transfer of about 2 hours north, settle in, sunset on the beach—
2Surf session 1: basics, safety, reading the bayRest, walk to the harbourSurf-skate to practise pop-ups and turns
3Surf session 2Theory: tides, currents, the line-upSandboarding
4Surf session 3Free afternoon or a short second surf if the wind holds offMoroccan cooking
5Surf session 4RestParadise Valley (half to full day)
6Surf session 5Video review of your surfingEssaouira or the Agadir souk
7Optional last surf, earlyPack, final evening mealSlow morning, harbour, mint tea

If you leave on the morning after day 7, you get a full last day. If you fly out on day 7 itself, skip that session and give yourself plenty of time for the drive back to Agadir.

Why does the itinerary put surfing in the morning?

On most days in Imsouane, the cleanest water comes early, before the wind picks up. Once onshore wind builds after midday, the surface turns choppy and the waves lose shape. For a beginner, that makes everything harder: the board is less stable and waves break less predictably.

Surfing in the morning also gives you the afternoon to recover. Paddling uses muscles most people rarely train, and by day three or four tired shoulders are the usual limit, not the conditions.

What can you do on a flat day near Imsouane?

Flat days are less common in the main season, from September to April, but they happen. In summer the swell is smaller overall. These are the most practical alternatives within reach:

ActivityTime neededBest forNotes
Surf-skate1–2 hoursEvery levelTrains the same rotation and timing as surfing
SandboardingHalf dayGroups, familiesGood fun when the sea is quiet
Moroccan cookingHalf dayAnyoneTajines, bread and mint tea
Paradise ValleyHalf to full dayWalkers, swimmersA palm-lined gorge with rock pools inland from Agadir. Water levels change with the season
Agadir soukHalf to full dayShopping, foodEasy to combine with an airport run
EssaouiraFull dayHistory, architectureAbout 90 minutes north, with a walled old town (medina) and harbour
Imsouane harbour1–2 hoursEveryoneA working fishing harbour where the boats land

A flat day is also a good time for theory: tide tables, how a point break works, where to sit in the line-up. That knowledge pays off once the swell returns.

When should you come for this kind of trip?

The right month depends on your level more than on the calendar.

PeriodSwellWater temperatureBest for
September–NovemberConsistent, buildingAround 20–23C, coolingEvery level
December–FebruaryBiggest, busiestAround 17–20CIntermediate and experienced
March–AprilStill consistentAround 17–20CEvery level
May–AugustSmallestAround 20–23CBeginners, learning

A 3/2 wetsuit covers most of the year. Expect more flat-day swaps in summer and more need for patience with crowds in midwinter.

Where do you surf during the week?

The main wave is Magic Bay, a right-hand point break of roughly 800 metres that peels over sand for much of its length. It is unusually forgiving, which is why beginners and experienced surfers can share the same week. Cathedral Point, on the exposed side of the headland, is more powerful and breaks over rock, so it is for confident surfers only.

There are more than fifteen surf spots between Imsouane and Agadir, including Anchor Point at Taghazout. Intermediate surfers can use one or two days of the week to explore up and down the coast when the swell suits it.

How do you get there?

Agadir Al Massira (AGA) is the nearest airport, about two hours by road. Marrakech also works, but the drive takes 3.5 to 4 hours, which usually rules out anything else on day one. Essaouira is about 90 minutes to the north. For transfers, agree the arrangement before you travel rather than sorting it out at arrivals.

Plan your week

If you’d rather have the week organised for you, our surf weeks follow this rhythm, and the schedule shifts day to day with the conditions. You can also book individual surf lessons, hire boards and wetsuits from our rental page, or browse the flat-day activities. Questions & answers

How many days of surfing can I expect on a 7-day trip to Morocco?
Five sessions is a realistic target for a week, usually spread over days two to six. Arrival and departure days rarely leave time for a proper session. Planning for five instead of seven leaves room for a flat or windy day without the week feeling wasted.
What time of day is best for surfing in Imsouane?
Mornings are usually best, because the wind tends to be light and the surface clean. Onshore wind generally builds after midday and makes the waves choppier. Most surf itineraries in Imsouane put sessions early and keep afternoons for other things.
What can I do in Imsouane if there are no waves?
Common flat-day options are Paradise Valley, sandboarding in the dunes, surf-skate practice, a Moroccan cooking session, and a trip to the Agadir souk or to Essaouira. A walk around Imsouane's fishing harbour, where the boats land, makes an easy half-day. Video review and theory on tides and reading the line-up are also good uses of a quiet day.
Is a 7-day surf itinerary in Morocco suitable for complete beginners?
Yes. Magic Bay in Imsouane is unusually forgiving because it peels slowly over sand for much of its length. A week gives beginners time to go from first pop-ups to riding along the face of the wave. May to August, when swell is smaller, is generally the easiest time to learn.
Which airport should I fly into for a surf trip to Imsouane?
Agadir Al Massira (AGA) is the nearest airport, about 2 hours from Imsouane by road. Marrakech is also an option, but the drive takes roughly 3.5 to 4 hours. Arriving at Agadir usually means you can settle in on day one and be ready to surf on day two.
