Morocco or Bali: what is the short answer?
Morocco and Bali are both excellent surf destinations, but they suit different trips. Morocco is a short flight from Europe, with cool Atlantic water, long right-hand point breaks and a season that runs through the northern winter. Bali is a long-haul tropical trip with warm water, mostly reef waves and a season that peaks in the northern summer. The choice usually comes down to when you can travel, where you are flying from and what kind of wave you want to surf.
How do Morocco and Bali compare side by side?
| Morocco (Imsouane) | Bali | |
|---|---|---|
| Best season | September to April; biggest December to February | Roughly May to September (dry season) on the west coast |
| Quieter-swell months | May to August, the best time for learning | Wet season (roughly November to March), when the east coast often works better |
| Water temperature | About 17-20C in winter, 20-23C in summer | Usually around 27-29C all year |
| What to wear | A 3/2 wetsuit for most of the year | Boardshorts or a rash vest |
| Typical waves | Long right-hand point breaks, some over sand | Mostly reef breaks, plus a few sandy beach breaks |
| For beginners | Very good at Magic Bay | Good on beach breaks; many famous waves are for experts only |
| Flight from Western Europe | Roughly 3-4 hours to Agadir | Usually 16+ hours with at least one connection |
| Time difference from Western Europe | Little or none | Roughly 6-8 hours ahead |
| Relative cost of flights from Europe | Lower | Higher |
| Feel of the trip | Fishing village, slower pace | Ranges from busy surf towns to resorts |
When is the surf best in each place?
In Morocco, north-west Atlantic swell is most consistent from September to April. December to February brings the biggest waves and the most people. Mornings are usually cleanest, and an onshore wind tends to build after midday.
Bali gets swell from the Indian Ocean all year. In the dry season, roughly May to September, the south-east trade winds blow offshore at west-coast breaks such as Uluwatu, Padang Padang and Bingin. In the wet season, east-coast spots usually get the cleaner conditions.
The two seasons largely complement each other. Morocco’s best months fall in Bali’s wet season, and Bali’s best months fall during Morocco’s small-wave summer.
What are the waves actually like?
Imsouane’s main wave is Magic Bay, a right-hand point break of roughly 800 metres that peels over sand for much of its length. It is forgiving enough for beginners but still long enough to keep experienced surfers interested. Cathedral Point sits on the exposed side of the headland. It is more powerful and breaks over rock. There are more than fifteen surf spots between Imsouane and Agadir, including Anchor Point at Taghazout.
Bali is best known for its reef waves, which are fast, often hollow and break over shallow coral. They are superb when you have the skill for them and unforgiving when you don’t. Learners usually start on softer beach breaks such as Kuta.
How long does it take to get there?
From much of Western Europe, a flight to Agadir Al Massira (AGA) takes roughly three to four hours. Imsouane is then about two hours north by road. Essaouira is about 90 minutes away and Marrakech is 3.5-4 hours away. We arrange transfers from Agadir or Marrakech.
To reach Bali from Europe you usually connect through the Middle East or Asia, and the whole journey often takes 16 hours or more. Add jet lag, and most people find a Bali trip only feels worthwhile at two weeks or longer. A week in Morocco works because you lose very little time getting there. If you live in Australia or South-East Asia, the comparison flips and Bali is the closer option.
What kind of trip is it?
Imsouane is a working fishing village, and the boats land in its harbour. We are a family-run camp: two surfing brothers, Mhend and Mohamed, and their mother Aïcha. Guests stay in the surf house, about five minutes from the line-up. Aïcha bakes bread every morning and cooks slow tajines, and evening meals are shared on the rooftop. We cap groups in the water at five.
Bali offers more variety. You can choose from villas, hostels, resorts, cafés and nightlife, and the busiest surf towns have plenty going on outside the water. The popular breaks can get crowded, especially in the dry season.
When is Bali the better choice?
We would point you to Bali if:
- You want warm water and no wetsuit.
- You can only travel between May and August and want solid surf. Morocco is at its smallest then.
- You are an experienced surfer chasing hollow reef waves.
- You live in Asia or Australia.
- You have several weeks and want a busy social scene.
When does Morocco make more sense?
Morocco is usually the better fit if:
- You are travelling from Europe and have about a week.
- You can come between September and April.
- You want long, forgiving rights to build your skills.
- You want a quiet village, home cooking and a small group.
