Surf Camp vs Surf Hostel in Imsouane: Which Suits You?

Surf camp or surf hostel? What each includes (rooms, coaching, boards, meals), how the costs compare, and which kind of traveller each one really suits.

By Tafukt Surf Updated 5 min read

A surf hostel sells you a bed and leaves the surfing to you. Lessons, board hire and meals are usually booked and paid for separately. A surf camp bundles accommodation, coached sessions, boards, wetsuits and usually meals into a planned week. Hostels suit confident surfers on a budget who want freedom. Camps suit beginners, solo travellers, families and anyone who wants to improve without organising everything themselves.

What is the difference between a surf camp and a surf hostel?

A surf hostel sells accommodation first. You get a bed, usually in a shared dorm, sometimes in a private room, plus a common area and a crowd of other surfers. Everything else you arrange yourself, including lessons, board hire, meals and getting to the waves.

A surf camp sells a surf week. Accommodation, coached sessions, equipment and usually food come as one package, with the days planned around the tide and the wind.

The line between them is not always sharp. Many hostels can point you to a local surf school, and some camps are relaxed about structure. But the basic difference holds: a hostel gives you freedom, and a camp makes the decisions for you.

Who is a surf hostel better for?

To be fair to hostels, for some travellers they are the better choice:

  • Experienced surfers with their own boards, who can read a line-up, choose their own spots and don’t need coaching.
  • Travellers on a tight budget, for whom the lowest nightly rate matters most.
  • People moving along the coast who want to stop for two nights here and three there, rather than commit to a full week.
  • Travellers looking for nightlife. Imsouane is a quiet working fishing village, and evenings here are generally calm.

If that sounds like you, a hostel may serve you better than our camp. We would rather say so than sell you a week that doesn’t fit.

Who is a surf camp better for?

A camp earns its keep when the planning and coaching actually matter to you:

  • Beginners, who benefit from a coach choosing the right conditions, a suitable board and a safe part of the wave.
  • Solo travellers. Most of our guests arrive alone, and the shared rooftop meals are how people meet.
  • Families. Some rooms suit families travelling together, and kids lessons start from age six.
  • People with one week of holiday who don’t want to spend it organising transport, gear and dinners.
  • Intermediate surfers who want to progress, through video analysis and small-group coaching.

How do the costs compare?

A hostel is almost always cheaper per night. The real comparison is the total for a week: once you add a few lessons, a week of board hire and eating out, the gap narrows. How much it narrows depends on how much coaching you want and where you eat. Winter, especially December to February, is the busiest period on this coast, so book early for those months whichever option you choose. We confirm our prices directly when you book.

What does a surf week at Tafukt Surf include?

We are a family-run camp: two surfing brothers, Mhend and Mohamed, and their mother Aïcha, who does the cooking. Guests stay in our surf house, about five minutes from the line-up. All weeks run for 7 nights.

WeekBest forWhat it adds
Surf Camp WeekBeginners and improvers5 guided sessions, board and wetsuit
Surf & Yoga WeekAnyone wanting a slower pace5 rooftop yoga sessions, a traditional hammam, slow-food family dinners
Surf Development WeekIntermediate and upDaily video analysis, spot-chasing by 4x4, tides and line-up theory

Our coaches are ISA-certified and compete at home and abroad, and groups in the water are capped at five. Sessions are usually in the morning, when the wind is cleanest, before the onshore wind builds after midday.

Is Imsouane a good place for either option?

Yes. Magic Bay is a right-hand point break of roughly 800 metres that peels over sand for much of its length, so it is unusually forgiving for beginners and still fun for experienced surfers. Cathedral Point, on the exposed side of the headland, breaks over rock and is more powerful. Swell is most consistent from September to April, and May to August brings smaller waves that suit learners. Imsouane is roughly 2 hours north of Agadir, where the nearest airport is, and about 90 minutes south of Essaouira.

Questions & answers

Is a surf camp or a surf hostel better for a complete beginner?
For most beginners, a surf camp is the easier choice, because coaching, a suitable board and a wetsuit are already arranged, and someone else reads the conditions for you. In a hostel you would need to find and book a surf school yourself. That works, but it takes more effort in an unfamiliar place. At Tafukt Surf, beginners learn at Magic Bay, a forgiving point break that peels over sand.
Can I book surf lessons without booking a full surf week?
Yes. Tafukt Surf runs daily lessons: 2-hour group lessons for up to five surfers, 2-hour semi-private lessons for two or three people, 2-hour private coaching with video analysis, and 1h30 kids lessons from age six. Boards and wetsuits are included in all lessons.
Is a surf camp a good choice if I'm travelling alone?
It often is, because the social side is built into the week. Most guests at Tafukt Surf arrive on their own, and the shared evening meals on the rooftop are where people get to know each other. A hostel can be sociable too, but it depends far more on who happens to be staying that night.
What kind of rooms does the Tafukt Surf house have?
The surf house is about five minutes from the line-up, and some rooms suit families travelling together. We confirm the exact room setup for your dates directly when you book. Contact us by WhatsApp or email and we will reply the same day.
Do I need to bring my own board and wetsuit?
No. Boards and wetsuits are included in our lessons and surf-week packages, and we rent everything from soft-tops to performance shortboards, plus 3/2 and 4/3 wetsuits in every size. You are welcome to bring your own equipment if you prefer.
Is a surf camp worth it if I already surf well?
A standard camp week may give you more structure than you want. The Surf Development Week is designed for intermediate surfers and up: small-group coaching capped at five, daily video analysis, trips up the coast by 4x4 to find the best spots, and sessions on tides, theory and reading the line-up. If you just want to surf on your own schedule, a hostel plus board rental may suit you better.
