Surf Camp vs Surf School vs Going It Alone

A surf school sells lessons, a surf camp bundles a whole week, an independent trip splits it all up. An honest comparison of cost, time and results in Imsouane.

By Tafukt Surf Updated 5 min read

A surf school sells instruction by the session — you arrange your own bed, food and transport. A surf camp bundles seven nights, coaching, board and wetsuit into one booking. An independent trip means organising every piece yourself: usually the lowest total cost and the most freedom, but no coaching and no ready-made group. Which one fits depends on your level, your time, and how much you want handled for you.

What is the difference between a surf camp and a surf school?

A surf school sells instruction by the session. You book a two-hour lesson, a board and wetsuit come with it, and everything else — where you sleep, what you eat, how you reach the beach — stays yours to organise. It works well if you already have a room booked, or you simply want to find out whether you like surfing.

A surf camp sells a week. Beds, guided sessions, equipment and meals arrive as one booking, with a rhythm already set: surf in the morning, food on the table afterwards, people to eat it with. You trade some spontaneity for all the time you would otherwise spend planning.

An independent trip is neither. You rent a room, hire a board by the day or fly your own, read the forecast yourself and paddle out when it looks right. Complete freedom, no coaching, every decision on you.

We run both ends of this, so the comparison below includes the cases where we are not the right answer.

Which option costs the least?

An independent trip is usually the lowest total outlay, particularly outside the busy December to February window. That comparison is only fair if you count everything: board rental adds up across seven days, eating out three times a day adds up faster, and transport to spots is a real cost in a region where the good waves are spread along the coast.

A camp week concentrates the spending into one payment made before you leave home, which some people prefer and others find restrictive. Booking lessons individually sits between the two.

What actually moves the number, in any of the three: the season you travel in, whether you fly a board bag, and how you get from the airport. We do not publish figures here, and we would gently suggest treating any published third-party fare as an estimate. If you take a taxi anywhere in Morocco, agree the fare before you get in.

How much do you actually improve?

This is where the three options separate most clearly. Coaching capped at five surfers in the water means a coach can watch every wave you catch; beyond that, feedback thins out. Our coaches are ISA-certified and compete at home and abroad. Private coaching and the Surf Development Week both use video analysis, which shortens the gap between doing something wrong and understanding why.

The wave helps too. Magic Bay is roughly an 800-metre right-hand point that peels over sand for much of its length, so a mistake costs you less than it would on a reef. Cathedral Point, on the exposed side of the headland, is more powerful and breaks over rock — a different proposition entirely.

Mornings are usually the cleanest, with onshore wind building after midday. The region gets around 340 days of sun a year, so rain is rarely the thing that stops you.

When a surf camp is the wrong choice

If you already surf well and want to make your own calls on tide and swell, a fixed schedule will frustrate you — rent a board and go. If you are travelling with someone who has no interest in surfing, paying for a full package around them makes little sense. If you want to test the water before committing a week, book one lesson.

And if you are expecting hotel service, we are honestly not that. It is a family house — two brothers and their mother — and the character of the place comes from being a home rather than a business with a front desk. Imsouane is a working fishing village with a harbour, not a nightlife town.

Getting here

Agadir Al Massira (AGA) is the nearest airport, roughly two hours away by road. Marrakech is 3.5 to 4 hours, and Essaouira sits about 90 minutes to the north. We arrange transfers from Agadir or Marrakech — send us your flight details when you book. Agadir is the shorter drive and the cheaper of the two; Marrakech costs noticeably more for the extra distance.

If you want the wave without the week, look at our lessons or just take a board from rental. If you would rather have it all handled, the three formats are set out on surf weeks, and the non-surfing side — cooking, sandboarding, Paradise Valley — is under activities. Anything we have not listed, from room details to dietary questions, we confirm directly when you get in touch.

Questions & answers

Can I book a single lesson instead of a whole week?
Yes. We run standalone group lessons of two hours for up to five surfers, semi-private lessons for two or three people, private coaching with video analysis, and kids lessons of an hour and a half from age six. Boards and wetsuits are included. This is the sensible route if you already have accommodation or you only want to find out whether you like surfing.
Is a surf camp worth it if I have already surfed before?
It depends what you want from the week. If you are intermediate and up, the Surf Development Week is built for you: small-group coaching capped at five, daily video analysis, spot-chasing up the coast by 4x4, and sessions on tides, theory and reading the line-up. If you are an experienced surfer who mainly wants to chase swell on your own schedule, an independent trip with board rental will suit you better.
How do I find out what a week costs?
We confirm pricing and availability directly rather than publishing figures that go out of date, so message us on WhatsApp or by email through the contact page. We normally come back the same day. A small deposit secures the week and the balance is settled on arrival.
Do I need to bring my own board and wetsuit?
No. Boards and wetsuits are included in all lessons and surf-week packages. If you would rather bring your own equipment you are very welcome to, and we also rent separately — soft-tops through to performance shortboards, wetsuits in 3/2 and 4/3 in every size, and surf-skates, by the day or the week.
Is Imsouane a good place for a complete beginner?
It is one of the more forgiving places on the Moroccan coast to start. Magic Bay is a long right-hand point that breaks over sand for much of its length, so the wave is gentler than a reef or a heavy beach break. May to August brings the smallest swell of the year, which is the easiest window for a first time on a board.
I am travelling alone. Will I end up on my own all week?
Most of our guests arrive by themselves, so you would be in the majority. The shared meals on the rooftop are how people meet — that is deliberate, and it is the main social structure of the week. If you would rather keep to yourself, nothing is compulsory.
