Do you actually need your own board in Morocco?
For most guests, no. At Tafukt Surf, boards and wetsuits are included in every lesson and surf-week package. That covers soft-tops for your first sessions all the way up to performance shortboards. If you are learning, or still working out which board suits you, flying one in adds cost and hassle without much benefit.
The case for bringing your own gets stronger as you improve. A board you know well (its volume, its rocker, how it paddles) lets you spend the week improving instead of adjusting to new equipment. That matters most on something like the Surf Development Week, where you get daily video analysis and trips to other spots up the coast by 4x4.

A middle route works well for a lot of people. They bring their own wetsuit, leash and wax, and use a local board. Small items fit in your normal luggage, and you skip the board bag completely.
Which board suits the waves around Imsouane?
Magic Bay is a long right-hand point break, roughly 800 metres, that peels over sand for much of its length. It is unusually forgiving, and boards with plenty of volume make the most of it: longboards, mid-lengths and fuller shortboards. Cathedral Point, on the exposed side of the headland, is more powerful and breaks over rock, so it suits a more performance-oriented board and riders comfortable in heavier surf.

If you only own a high-performance shortboard, think about whether it suits a long, mellow point break. On smaller days, many visitors end up happier on something with more foam.
When is it worth bringing a board?
The season makes a difference. North-west Atlantic swell is most consistent from September to April, and December to February brings the biggest, busiest surf. In those months, experienced surfers get the most out of a familiar board. From May to August the waves are smaller and better for learning, and our boards will usually serve you better than a performance board of your own.
What does flying with a surfboard involve?
Most airlines treat a surfboard as sports equipment. That usually means a separate fee plus limits on weight and length, and all of these vary by carrier and fare. Check the policy before you book your flight, not after. Adding the board online in advance is usually cheaper than declaring it at the check-in desk.
Most international arrivals come through Agadir Al Massira (AGA), about 2 hours from Imsouane. Marrakech is about 4 hours away. Board bags sometimes arrive on a different belt or at the oversize counter, so allow a little extra time at arrivals.
How should you pack a board for the flight?
- Use a padded travel bag. For a board going in the hold, thicker padding is worth it.
- Take out the fins and pack them separately, along with a fin key.
- Protect the nose, tail and rails. Foam pipe insulation or bubble wrap works well.
- Pack wetsuits and towels around the board as extra padding.
- Bring a small ding-repair kit in case something does get damaged.
- Wax for cool-to-warm water covers most of the year, since the water here is around 17-23C.
Getting your board from the airport to Imsouane
We arrange airport transfers from Agadir and Marrakech. If you are bringing a board, mention it when you send your flight details, and we will confirm the arrangements directly when you book. If you travel independently by taxi instead, agree the fare before setting off and say upfront that you have a board. Boards are often carried on a roof rack, so it helps to have your own soft straps.
What about wetsuits and smaller gear?
A 3/2 wetsuit covers most of the year. Winter water is about 17-20C and summer about 20-23C, and some people prefer a 4/3 on colder winter mornings. We stock both sizes of suit in every size, so bringing your own is about personal fit rather than need. Leashes, wax and reef-safe sunscreen are easy to pack. Imsouane gets around 340 days of sun a year.
